Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone – Trailer
This is the 1st edition of the Harry Potter series and it shows Harry Potter’s first year at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as he begins his education and discovers he is a wizard. The books had received such passionate readers around the world and I found the director did not disappoint in bringing out the excitement and big-screen magic.
It started out a bit rough. We see Harry scenes with his foster family absurdly overacted and exaggerated but Harry saves the show with his charming and expressive act. The film moves in a brisk pace and quickly outlines what kind of worlds the story is taking place in. Harry is well known in the wizarding world as ‘The Boy Who Lived’ as he was the only survivor of the killing curse that killed his parents at the hands of the malevolent and all-powerful wizard ‘Who Shall Not Be Named’. Being raised by his aunt and uncle, Harry has no knowledge of his magical past and what he was up against.
Harry and Ronald Weasley, the youngest in his family and a new kid in school too, meet at the station and slowly build a bond and Ron helps the naïve Harry. They both get into one of the four houses and made friends with the know-it-all girl, Hermione. Soon Harry realizes there is more in the magic world than he had realized.
When they realized someone is after the sorcerer’s stone, they risk the trouble to take on powers stronger than theirs, because no one believes them, in hopes of saving Hogwarts and all the wizards and Muggles.
The most memorable scene for me was where the wand chooses its wizard. Harry is given various wands, by Ollivander (Actor John Hurt, who was just perfect for this role), to try before finding the right one. It’s fun to see how the wands react to individuals who don’t fit and what happens when the wand finds the perfect fit. It is impossible to get goosebumps when Ollivander whispers what makes Harry’s wand special.
The film’s main characters; Harry, Ron, and Hermione, display a cute, wide-eyed innocence that serves the story well. They have a perfect child-like way of introducing the audience to the world of magic. Every new discovering is like we are all in it together.
The director was really faithful to the book and had consulted J. K. Rowling on every minor adjustment. Chris Columbus added some necessary scenes throughout the film to make the audience feel the emotions. A smart move from the filmmakers. The film is successful in re-creating and reminding us of what we loved about the book because of its visual richness. There are moments where the film allows us to share in Harry’s magical wonder and lets us recapture our own as well. This was the beginning of a very huge fantasy craze.

In the 3rd edition of the Harry Potter series, the film begins with Harry practicing incarnations under his blanket. His aunt provokes him and he casts a spell on her and runs away. The third year of Harry Potter and his two best friends; Ron and Hermione, in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry does not start as good as they hoped. The killer, Sirius Black, escaped from Azkaban prison and he is heading back to school, bent on murdering him. The soul-sucking Dementors are the guards from the prison and are dispatched to protect him back at school.
The killer, Sirius, gets in school anyway and Harry obtains a map showing all the secret passage in Hogwarts. He discovers some information about his new teacher, Sirius, Snape and his parents which will put him against the Ministry of Magic.
Harry is determined to solve the mystery of why Sirius wants him dead. So he joins the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor Lupin, and begins to work against conquering his fear. The fact that Harry battles with his fear head-on, he gets more courage for the next encounter.
In this film, we see Harry and the rest of the characters become more developed and a lot more interesting. There are new additions to the edition that are darker and scary. “Beware of the dreaded soul kiss of spiritual death, which they eagerly plant on ‘good’ and ‘bad’ wizards alike”. Dumbledore warns the student.
The Prisoner of Azkaban is cinematic fun and entertaining. Even with the change of director, the film is still able to have the suspense and the same intensity with the book.
